Reduce the prominence of your ears

Ear surgery (otoplasty) is used to reduce an ear prominence. Ears are either brought closer to the head or reduced in size. This procedure can also be used to remove asymmetry.

Ear surgery is often carried out early in life, from four onwards, as it can improve a child’s social experience. The operation can also be carried out in later life if not done earlier.

Length

Otoplasty typically lasts between two and three hours.

Procedure

The reshaping and positioning of the ear is created by removal and sculpting of cartilage within the ear or by the use of stitches to reshape the existing cartilage. The desired final shape of the ear determines where incisions and work on the cartilage are carried out.

Recovery

Normal activities can be resumed within a week with strenuous activity possible within one or two months.

Risks

Risks with this procedure are low. Clots are an infrequent occurrence and usually easily corrected. Infection is possible but again usually mild and easily treated.

Mr Fuan Chan Blackrock Clinic

Rating from 39 Reviews Recommended without hesitation.stephen, Ireland, 07 Mar 17

I had an Earfold procedure in February and the whole experience from initial consultation to post op consultation was a pleasure. Mr Chan is such a gentleman and a total professional and you just know that if his patient was not happy, then he would not be happy. Recommended without hesitation. You could be mistaken for thinking you were in a five star hotel. When one arrives for an initial consultation it is all quite private and all the staff from reception to Mr Chan were a total pleasure to deal with.

Ear correction is one of the most popular cosmetic procedures currently being done in Ireland. Having protruding ears can significantly impact on self-esteem and people can be very self-conscious about their appearance, particularly when they are in their teens. A simple invention called the earFold device has proven to be extremely effective. These are metal alloy clips we use to pin back the ears of a patient, to create a customised result.

Rating from 9 Reviews I am very happy with the result and would recommend anyone thinking about the procedureJennifer, Ireland, 02 May 16

At the end of March 2016, I had bitlateral otoplasty. I had wanted to get this done for as long as I can remember but had always been daunted by what I thought the process would entail and so, I put it off for a good few years. (I am now 27 years old) Dr. John Curran was my surgeon and I met him for two consultations prior to the procedure. When I met him, he gave me an assessment of my ears and what he could do. He also explained the procedure. My impression of him was that he has a very measured and sensible approach. He encouraged me to think about it which I really appreciated - I didn't feel pressured into anything which made me feel relaxed and comfortable. On the day of the procedure, he met my partner and I and I and he has excellent bedside manner - he settled my nerves and I was excited to have the procedure done. I was under general anaesthetic for the procedure and it took approximately two and a half hours. I experienced little or no pain after my treatment, I did take painkillers to keep any tenderness/discomfort at bay. It has been 7 weeks since my surgery and I am really happy that I had it done. I feel like my ears are still my own but now are much more unnoticeable and they are more in proportion to my other facial features. I am a lot more confident and am happy to tie up my hair etc. - something I have always hated doing. The hardest part of the process for me was the recovery time which meant wearing a dressing for one week post treatment. I was lucky in that I had time off of work for Easter but I was impatient for the week to be up so I could get the dressing off and be out and about again! On the whole, it was a very small price to pay. I am very happy with the result and would recommend anyone thinking about the procedure to book a consultation. The process was a lot easier than I had initially imagined and I am so happy that I did it. I had my otoplasty treatment with Dr. John Curran at the Bon Secours Hospital Tralee and my experience was really positive. Everybody I met that day - from the reception staff, to the nurses, anaesthetist and my surgeon, was really caring and professional and I was very well looked after. The day was just easy and everything went really smoothly. My treatment took place at 9am and I was able to leave later that day around 4pm. It was my first time at the Bon Secours Tralee and I will definitely return if I need to have treatment in the future.

Rating from 1 Review Very professional and helpfulAgnes, Ireland, 03 Nov 15

I am very happy with The Sandymount Clinic, I have always found them to be very professional and helpful. There is a friendly and atmosphere there. I have had some treatments and as a result some friends have followed with the same treatments. I am also happy with the cost involved for each treatment. I do not wish to go into details about them. It was recommended, I was happy with the advice the treatment the result etc. My first impressions were good and I have stayed with the Sandymount Clinic since my first visit. I find Mr. Small very easy to talk to and the rest of the staff are very nice to deal with also.

Dublin Cosmetic Surgery Centre

20 Fitzwilliam Place, Dublin, Dublin 2

Protruding ears (“Bat Ears”) is an inherited condition and can cause significant embarrassment especially if a person is constantly teased. In all people the ears are not completely symmetrical and it is usual for one ear to be further out than the other. There are two ways in which the ears can protrude more than usual: 1. The inner part of the ear flap (concha) might be unusually long or large.2. The angle between the concha and the outer part of the ear flap (helix) might not be properly formed so the helix extends sideways rather than going backwards (the usual position). Often both of the above conditions exist in severe cases of protruding ears. The purpose of an ear reshape operation (otoplasty) is to reduce the distance between the side of the head and the protruding part of the ear to about 15mm (1/2”). Ear reshape (otoplasty) can also (a) reduce the size and projection of the concha if it is too big and/or (b) establish the normal angle between the concha and the helix. It is not usually possible to reduce the size of very large ears that have a normal shape due to the complex shape of the ear. The Dublin Cosmetic Surgery Centre has successfully performed ear reshapes on hundreds of women and men over the last 20 years.

Otoplasty Abroad €999  -  €1000
Otoplasty (ear correction) surgery: Otoplasty is the surgical procedure which reshapes external ear, fixes either deformities or simply causes them to look much better. Otyoplasty is usually either an aesthetic or reconstructive procedure. Classic otoplasty is also often known as ear pinning, in which big or extruding ears are "pinned" back towards the person's head. Reconstructive otoplasty allows to take care of serious ear defects that may originate from birth or even some type of external injury. The otoplasty surgery takes just 1.5 hour. It is usually done under a local anesthesia. After the surgery a patient can almost immediately recover at home. After the surgery ears are bandaged in order to protect and to promote the best healing position for the ears. A new dressing is necessary the next day. Stitches are taken out in 7- 8 days. A bandage over the ears must be worn the next 7 days 24 hours per day. Later it is advised to wear the bandage for 2 weeks more at nightime. Complications after the otoplasty surgery are rare. For 3% of all patients there is a light bleeding for the first couple of days. For the same amount of all patients an ear can return to the previous position in 2-3 months, but then the second corrective surgery can be done. However, the most common symptom after the surgery is the slight pain which the patients may feel for 1-2 days.
