What is TMJ - Temporomandibular Joint Treatment?

The temporomandibular joint is the joint that connects the jaw to the skull. There are two temporomandibular joints on either side of the face.

What is the function of the temporomandibular joint?

The temporomandibular joint helps the jaws to move.

What are the disorders that affect the Temporomandibular Joint?

Temporomandibular Joint disorders include headaches, pain while opening and closing the mouth, difficulty is opening the mouth, the jaws getting stuck, problems in biting and fitting the two jaws together and jaw pain or tenderness.

How are Temporomandibular Joint disorders treated?

Temporomandibular joints are treated by prescribing pain killers, anti-inflammatory medications or anti-depressants. Dentists also fit mouth guards or oral splints to treat temporomandibular disorders. Ultrasound treatments and placing heat and ice packs are also recommended.  Minimally invasive procedures to remove fluid or other debris are performed. Steroids or neuromuscular relaxant injections are administered to treat disorders. Surgical procedures are performed if the disorder is not resolved using other procedures. Alternative healthcare therapies like acupuncture, yoga and meditation, and chiropractic care are also effective in treating TMJ disorders.

Patients should not bite hard objects like pencils. They should not eat hard or chewy food products. They should relax and learn stress management. They should maintain correct posture. Every step of my visit was handled with great care, attention and I felt comfortable throughoutMichael, Ireland, 25 04 18

Examination of a troubling upper molar filled more than 10 years ago. Further full examination and X-rays of teeth along with full and future treatment plan. Pleasantly surprised from my visit to Docklands Dental. I am a very nervous patient in general (don’t like needles or whirring drills!) and Dr. Barry managed to put me almost immediately at ease. There was no conveyor belt feeling as I have experienced at other practices. They took their time; Every step of my visit was handled with great care, attention and I felt very comfortable throughout the examination process. This was then followed through with a comprehensive chat around the health of my teeth in general and a long-term treatment plan. Highly recommend and thanks again. Top Professionals!

TMJ - Temporomandibular Joint Treatment
The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is the area directly in front of the ear on either side of the head where the upper jaw (maxilla) and lower jaw (mandible) meet. Within the TMJ, there are moving parts that allow the upper jaw to close on the lower jaw. This joint is a typical sliding "ball and socket" that has a disc sandwiched between it. The TMJ is used throughout the day to move the jaw, especially in biting and chewing, talking, and yawning. TMJ disorders are a group of complex problems of the jaw joint. Because muscles and joints work together, a problem with either one can lead to stiffness, headaches, ear pain, bite problems, clicking sounds, or locked jaws. Teeth grinding and teeth clenching increase the wear on the cartilage lining of the TMJ. Those who grind or clench their teeth may be unaware of this behavior unless they are told by someone observing this while sleeping or by a dental professional noticing signs of wear and tear on the teeth. Many patients waken in the morning with jaw or ear pain.Gum chewing or fingernail bitingDental problems and misalignment of the teeth (malocclusion). Patients may complain that it is difficult to find a comfortable bite or that the way their teeth fit together has changed.Chewing on only one side of the jaw can lead to or be a result of TMJ problems.Stress frequently leads to unreleased nervous energy. It is very common for people under stress to release this nervous energy by either consciously or unconsciously grinding and clenching their teeth.Occupational tasks such as holding the telephone between the head and shoulder may contribute to TMJ disorders.

If you are missing one or more teeth and would like to smile, speak and eat again with comfort and confidence, there is good news! Dental implants are teeth that can look and feel just like your own! Under proper conditions, such as placement by an oral surgeon and diligent patient maintenance, implants can last a lifetime. Long-term studies continue to show improving success rates for implants.

The dentist did a great job, looks realGarret, Ireland, 26 11 22

Got a filling from Dr Madina on Thursday 23/11/22. She did a great job, looks real.

TMJ - Temporomandibular Joint Treatment
Do you suffer from headaches, jaw pain, or suffer from teeth grinding? These are all symptoms that can be easily resolved at Noel Creaner’s surgery. Many patients come to us having suffered from headaches for years, taking pain killers with no lasting relief and not realising that the problem is dental in origin. Often many of these problems arise from irregularity of your bite which puts stress and tension in surrounding muscles. Your treatment may include simple bite adjustment or a night time acrylic splint, and in some cases you may need crowns and veneers to re-establish a new bite. Cost varies depending on number of treatments required.
