Can't recommend the guys in Riverforest Dental enough! Staff are professional, easy-going & flexible. I have had routine work (fillings etc.) and bigger jobs (root canals / front teeth crowns) done here and was delighted with all experiences and outcomes. And I say this as someone who would have been quite apprehensive about going to the dentist!

A relaxed and educated experience

5 50 Cosmetic Dentist Consultation

A patient in the dental chair can be traumatic, what a relaxed and educated experience and will recommended. I have scheduled a follow up appointment without hesitation! The fees are explained, because I'm private and the friendliness of the staff needs to be mentioned!.

I will return and happy to do do so, because the treatment plan is detailed and affordable! Was happy to part with payment and informed of scheduling and treatment to keep the costs down, and was given dates to suite my work arrangements.

5 50 Dentist Consultation • Paid: €150

The staff were courteous, helpful, understanding, compassionate, & respectful. Dr. McGovern, despite having a loaded schedule made room for me to be seen, and discovered a filling from when I was I child had cracked & broken exposing my nerve. Upon diagnosis requiring a root canal, I was treated & provided a temporary after drilling out the root and given a prescription for antibiotics to clear up the infection I had developed in my nerve, having waited too long before seeking Dr. McGovern's & Dr. Haughey's fine care. Glad to entrust them with the health of my smile. Why would anyone go anywhere else?.

CEREC Dental Restorations

CEREC Dental Restorations - Riverforest Dental ClinicCEREC Dental Restorations - Riverforest Dental Clinic

We have the latest technology available to provide crowns, inlays (fillings) and veneers for your teeth. It is called CEREC (Ceramic Reconstruction) and it is the future of restorative dentistry.

This treatment provides a restoration made of ceramic material as similar to natural tooth (enamel) as anything yet devised. It is suitable for replacing old Crowns, Amalgams (mercury/silver) fillings and will last longer than current white fillings.

The main advantages of CEREC are as follows:

  • Ceramics material – no metal in mouth
  • Minimal loss of tooth tissue (Less drilling!)
  • Done in only one visit & no temporaries.
  • No impression material in your mouth.

CEREC could be right for you if:

  • You want a long lasting restoration.
  • You want to keep as much of your own natural tooth as possible.
  • You want to minimize the number of trips to the surgery.
  • You want your teeth to look as natural as possible

Dental Bridges

Dental Bridges - Riverforest Dental ClinicDental Bridges - Riverforest Dental Clinic

A bridge may be recommended if youre missing one or more teeth. Gaps left by missing teeth eventually cause the remaining teeth to rotate or shift into the empty spaces, resulting in a bad bite. The imbalance caused by missing teeth can also lead to gum disease and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders.

Bridges are commonly used to replace one or more missing teeth. They span the space where the teeth are missing. Bridges are cemented to the natural teeth or implants surrounding the empty space. These teeth, called abutments, serve as anchors for the bridge. A replacement tooth, called a pontic, is attached to the crowns that cover the abutments. As with crowns, you have a choice of materials for bridges. Your dentist can help you decide which to use, based on the location of the missing tooth (or teeth), its function, aesthetic considerations and cost. Porcelain or ceramic bridges can be matched to the color of your natural teeth.

Dental Crowns

Dental Crowns - Riverforest Dental ClinicDental Crowns - Riverforest Dental Clinic

A crown is a tooth-shaped cover placed over a tooth that is badly damaged or decayed. A crown is made to look like your tooth. Many people call it a cap.

Crowns may be placed for several reasons. Usually the tooth has been broken or damaged a great deal by decay. As a result, a filling cant replace enough of the tooth or make the tooth strong enough. A crown may hold together parts of a cracked tooth. It also can be used to hold a bridge in place. Crowns can be used to improve appearance as well. They may be placed to cover misshapen or badly discolored teeth.

Crowns can be made ahead of time (prefabricated) or made to order in a laboratory. Prefabricated crowns are made of plastic or stainless steel. They can be used on a temporary basis until a permanent crown is made.

Since a dental crown that has been cemented into place essentially becomes the new outer surface for the tooth, it is easy to imagine how the placement of a crown can restore a tooth to its original shape. Its also easy to see how a dental crown can help to strengthen a tooth by way of being a hard outer shell that encases the tooth structure that lies within it. For both of these reasons, dental crowns are routinely made for teeth that have broken, worn excessively, or else have had large portions destroyed by tooth decay.

The dentist will prepare the tooth to the ideal shape for the crown. This will involve removing most of the outer surface, and leaving a strong inner core. The amount of the tooth removed will be the same as the thickness of the crown.

For more information, see our CEREC restorations above.

Gold Crown

Gold Crown - Riverforest Dental ClinicGold Crown - Riverforest Dental Clinic

Some dental crowns are made entirely of metal. The classic metal dental crown is one made of gold, or more precisely a gold alloy. Over the decades a variety of different metal alloys have been used in making dental crowns. Some of these metals are silver in color rather than yellow like gold.

Having a gold dental crown made can be an excellent choice. Here are some reasons why:

  • Because of its physical properties, dentists find gold to be a very workable metal. This characteristic helps a dentist to be able to achieve a very precise fit with the crown.
  • Since they are metal through and through, gold crowns withstand biting and chewing forces well. They will not chip. It would be uncharacteristic for a gold crown to break. Of all of the types of dental crowns, gold crowns probably have the greatest potential for lasting the longest.
  • Although they are very strong, the wear rate of a gold crown is about the same as tooth enamel. This means that a gold dental crown wont create excessive wear on the teeth it opposes (the teeth it bites against).

Metal dental crowns are usually placed on those teeth that are not overly visible when a person smiles (i.e., molars).

Dental implants are so natural-looking and feeling, you may forget you ever lost a tooth. You know that your confidence about your teeth affects how you feel about yourself, both personally and professionally. Under proper conditions, such as placement by an oral surgeon and diligent patient maintenance, implants can last a lifetime. Long-term studies continue to show improving success rates for implants.

Fillings

Fillings - Riverforest Dental ClinicFillings - Riverforest Dental Clinic

Choose from amalgam (silver) fillings or composite (white) fillings.

Amalgam Fillings:

  • Because of the metal content, amalgam fillings are strong and can withstand heavy biting pressure, and are therefore, used primarily for the back teeth.
  • Amalgam filling material is relatively inexpensive.
  • Most dental insurance companies cover amalgam fillings.

Composite Fillings:

  • The composite filling material contains acrylic and glass particles, no mercury.
  • The tooth-colored filling material looks very nice and natural.
  • This type of filling material is already hard when you leave the dental office, therefore, you can chew on it whenever you like.
  • Less tooth structure is lost because the dentist can make a smaller preparation.

Gingivitis Treatment

Gingivitis Treatment - Riverforest Dental ClinicGingivitis Treatment - Riverforest Dental Clinic

What is Gingivitis?

Gingivitis — an inflammation of the gums — is the initial stage of gum disease and the easiest to treat. The direct cause of gingivitis is plaque - the soft, sticky, colorless film of bacteria that forms constantly on the teeth and gums.

If the plaque is not removed by daily brushing and flossing, it produces toxins (poisons) that can irritate the gum tissue, causing gingivitis. At this early stage in gum disease, damage can be reversed, since the bone and connective tissue that hold the teeth in place are not yet affected. Left untreated, however, gingivitis can become periodontitis and cause permanent damage to your teeth and jaw.

How do I Know if I Have Gingivitis?

Classic signs and symptoms of gingivitis include red, swollen, tender gums that may bleed when you brush. Another sign of gum disease is gums that have receded or pulled away from your teeth, giving your teeth an elongated appearance. Gum disease can cause pockets to form between the teeth and gums, where plaque and food debris collect. Some people may experience recurring bad breath or a bad taste in their mouth, even if the disease is not advanced.

Mouth Guard

Mouth Guard - Riverforest Dental ClinicMouth Guard - Riverforest Dental Clinic

Mouth guards are coverings worn over teeth, and often used to protect teeth from injury from teeth grinding and during sports.

Custom-fitted mouth protectors are individually designed and made in the dental surgery.

First, your dentist will make an impression of your teeth and a mouth guard is then molded over the model using a special material. Due to the use of the special material and because of the extra time and work involved, this custom-made mouth guard is more expensive than the other types, but it provides the most comfort and best fit and protection.

Root canals

Root canals - Riverforest Dental ClinicRoot canals - Riverforest Dental Clinic

Root canal therapy refers to the process by which a dentist treats the inner aspects of a tooth, specifically that area inside a tooth that is occupied by its "pulp tissue." Most people would probably refer to a tooths pulp tissue as its "nerve."

Root canal treatment is needed for two main reasons. The first is infection. An untreated cavity is a common cause of pulp infection. The decay erodes the enamel and dentin of the tooth until it reaches a root canal. This allows bacteria to infect the pulp. Antibiotics cant get to infections inside teeth. The inflammation caused by the infection reduces the blood supply to the tooth. The reduced blood supply also keeps the pulp from healing.

The second reason for a root canal is damage to the pulp that cant be fixed. Trauma or a fractured tooth can damage the pulp. So can a lot of restoration, such as several fillings placed in the same tooth over a period of time.

When the pulp is inflamed but not infected, it may heal on its own. Your dentist may want see if this will happen before doing root canal treatment. If the pulp remains inflamed, it can be painful and may lead to infection.

Price can vary depending on tooth (number of canals).

Teeth Cleaning

Teeth Cleaning - Riverforest Dental ClinicTeeth Cleaning - Riverforest Dental Clinic

Dental cleanings involve removing plaque (soft, sticky, bacteria infested film) and tartar (calculus) deposits that have built up on the teeth over time. Your teeth are continually bathed in saliva which contains calcium and other substances which help strengthen and protect the teeth. While this is a good thing, it also means that we tend to get a build-up of calcium deposits on the teeth. This chalky substance will eventually build up over time, like limescale in a pipe or kettle. Usually it is tooth coloured and can easily be mistaken as part of the teeth, but it also can vary from brown to black in colour.

If the scale, or calculus (tartar, as dentists like to call it) is allowed to accumulate on the teeth it will unfortunately provide the right conditions for bacteria to thrive next to the gums. The purpose of the cleaning and polishing is basically to leave the surfaces of the teeth clean and smooth so that bacteria are unable to stick to them and you have a better chance of keeping the teeth clean during your regular home care.

We have a Hygienist here at the Clinic to carry out your scale and polish.

Teeth Whitening

We no longer do Rapid Teeth Whitening in our Clinic due to New EU Regulations.

We use Home Whitening Kits instead.

The way it works in our Practice is, You must first visit the dentist for initial examination and treatment to make sure your mouth is healthy and to eliminate any potential risk factors. Then we will take impressions for customized whitening trays, we fit the trays in the surgery we show you how to use the bleach properly the dentist will monitor you for an hour, give instructions then you carry out the treatment at home.Typically it will take 1-2 weeks to see significant changes in the colour of your teeth. You will come back for review appointments to make sure you are using the bleach correctly and to check the progress of the Shade.

TMJ - Temporomandibular Joint Treatment

TMJ - Temporomandibular Joint Treatment - Riverforest Dental ClinicTMJ - Temporomandibular Joint Treatment - Riverforest Dental Clinic

The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is the area directly in front of the ear on either side of the head where the upper jaw (maxilla) and lower jaw (mandible) meet. Within the TMJ, there are moving parts that allow the upper jaw to close on the lower jaw. This joint is a typical sliding "ball and socket" that has a disc sandwiched between it. The TMJ is used throughout the day to move the jaw, especially in biting and chewing, talking, and yawning.

TMJ disorders are a group of complex problems of the jaw joint. Because muscles and joints work together, a problem with either one can lead to stiffness, headaches, ear pain, bite problems, clicking sounds, or locked jaws.

  • Teeth grinding and teeth clenching increase the wear on the cartilage lining of the TMJ. Those who grind or clench their teeth may be unaware of this behavior unless they are told by someone observing this while sleeping or by a dental professional noticing signs of wear and tear on the teeth. Many patients waken in the morning with jaw or ear pain.
  • Gum chewing or fingernail biting
  • Dental problems and misalignment of the teeth (malocclusion). Patients may complain that it is difficult to find a comfortable bite or that the way their teeth fit together has changed.
  • Chewing on only one side of the jaw can lead to or be a result of TMJ problems.
  • Stress frequently leads to unreleased nervous energy. It is very common for people under stress to release this nervous energy by either consciously or unconsciously grinding and clenching their teeth.
  • Occupational tasks such as holding the telephone between the head and shoulder may contribute to TMJ disorders.

Veneers

Veneers - Riverforest Dental ClinicVeneers - Riverforest Dental Clinic

Porcelain dental veneers are a beautiful way to correct stained, chipped, or crooked teeth. By placing glass-like ceramic porcelain on the surface of teeth, dentists can provide patients with bright, straight, and natural looking smiles.

The glass-like ceramic that forms porcelain veneers closely resembles natural tooth enamel. This is because, much like real tooth enamel, porcelain veneers are translucent. When light strikes a natural tooth’s surface, it is not immediately reflected off. Instead, it penetrates the tooth enamel and reflects off the opaque tooth dentin that lies just beneath. This translucent effect is what gives teeth their luster. By replicating this, porcelain dental veneers provide patients with bright, natural looking smiles.

Porcelain dental veneers can also cover and repair cracked and chipped teeth. Because porcelain veneers are custom made and fitted to your teeth by a skilled cosmetic dentist, you can customize and improve much more than just the color of your teeth. Crooked and chipped teeth can have their appearances improved to give you a beautiful new smile.

Placement of porcelain veneers is one that requires the skill, precision, and artistry of a talented cosmetic dentist.
