Dental cavity solutions

Dental fillings are used to make small repairs to teeth that have been damaged due to tooth decay or fracture. They are normally relatively simple and inexpensive. For this reason very few (if any) people travel abroad for fillings.

However, fillings are often necessary as part of larger work, or the dentist may discover  they are necessary and it often make sense to get  fillings  done at the same time as other work.

What is a Dental Filling or Inlay?

A filling is simply a material that is placed into a cavity in a tooth. The filling helps to protect against further decay and strengthens the tooth.
You might need a filling if:

  • There is minor decay or a tooth
  • You  have a small fracture in a tooth
  • If you have a metal/amalgam filling that you want replaced with more natural looking filling
  • Composite filling are often used for purely cosmetic purposes in cosmetic bonding

Things to look out for are

  • Composite fillings are more expensive that amalgams
  • Not all dentists are trained in composite fillings
  • Amalgam filling contain mercury which is released to the atmosphere after death (if incinerated)
  • There are some, although unproven long term  health concerns associated with amalgam fillings
What is the procedure like?

Once the dentist has isolated and anesthetised the damaged area of the tooth, he will remove the decay with a drill or laser and cleanse the area of bacteria. The resulting cavity is roughed so that the resin will bond. It is then filled with an amalgam, composite or porcelain filling. In the case of composite fillings, the resin is applied in layers and hardened with a special light. Once the final layers have been applied the filling will be adjusted and polished.

What different types exist?

Amalgam – These are commonly referred to as metal fillings and can be quite visible. They contain mercury and although there have been ongoing questions about their long term safety there is no proof that they are a health hazard. However, it is becoming common for amalgam fillings to be replaced by composite fillings. Amalgam fillings have a lifespan of roughly 12 years

Composite/PorcelainComposite fillings can be made to match the coloration of your teeth. They are most costly and require specialized equipment and take longer to do.  More of the natural tooth can be preserved with composite fillings as the resin can be bonded in thin layers. Note that not all dentists can perform composite fillings.  Composite fillings have a lifespan of 5 to 7 years.

Inlays – If a large portion of you tooth is missing but a crown is not required then an inlay might be a good option.  An inlay involves a fabricated filling that is inserted between the cusps of a tooth – they can be made of gold, porcelain or resin. Inlays are considerably more expensive than fillings; however they are normally a replacement for a crown rather than a filling.

What affects the price?
  • The dentist selected
  • The position of the filling
  • The number of tooth surfaces the filling has
  • The number of fillings required
  • The type of fillings and in the case of inlays the material used
Price Comparison (Amalgam)

Price lists should always be viewed with caution as many factors can increase or decrease the resulting price. The follow table gives some indicative costs for fillings across the world. Composite fillings tend to be twice the price of amalgam.

US UK Hungary Poland Belgium Mexico Costa Rica Thailand
$100 $100 $60 $55 $100 $45 $45 $30
€75 €75 €45 €40 €75 €35 €35 €22

Amalgam or silver fillings are the metal coloured fillings that many people have. Amalgam was the traditional material used for fillings for many years. Many people nowadays are opting for the tooth coloured fillings. We provide both here at Dental Options
White Filling €120  -  €190
We use the latest generation in composite material which is a tooth coloured filling. This can be adapted to the shape of the patients tooth. These new composite materials are extremely durable and, when used in the correct way, are just as efficient as the silver fillings.

Rating from 23 Reviews Exceptionally caring and professionalJane, Ireland, 08 Jan 16

I chose this clinic on recommendation from a friend. I had ongoing issues with fillings and crowns. I found O'Connor Moore to be the most competitive price wise and also exceptionally caring and professional. A very professional and caring practice. The girls on reception are lovely and make you feel at ease from the moment you arrive. The standard of hygiene is exceptional as is the state of the art equipment. I was advised throughout my treatment of what was happening and why and was constantly reassured by Dr Moore and the nursing staff. I would highly recommend O’Connor Moore Dental Practice to anyone.

I went to see Dr. Liam Ó Droma. To cut a long story short, I'm terrified of dentists but he is a true gent made me feel at ease. I'm starting treatment next week at a very reasonable cost while still a bit nervous I know he will make me very calm. Easier then I thought I wont be as petrified when I go to see him next he also gave me a tablet which he said will calm me down he is also very reasonable when it comes to coat some of the other quotes I got were outlandish.

Filling Very happy, this dentist is very gentle, very calm and very Professional. I would highly recommend her.

Highly highly recommend!Sheila, Dubln, 14 May 16

I broke two front teeth after a fall and called this dental clinic as it was in my area of Dublin 7. The dentist who took the call, Joana, was kind enough to book me in for appointment within the hour as she could hear my distress. When I arrived at the clinic, she was very professional with a lovely manner which really put me at ease. Half of each front tooth had broken off and although they looked terrible she was kind and reassuring about how they could be fixed. . The procedure to rebuild the enamel on both of the teeth took around 25 mins. She spoke calmly throughout and was so gentle I hardly felt a thing! The result was better than I could have ever hoped for, you would never know that either tooth had been broken. And the charge was only €140 which I thought was excellent for the repair of two teeth. She also made a appointment for me in a weeks time for a further polish free of charge. Highly highly recommend! Clinic has a central location in Phibsboro beside Boots pharmacy.

Harbourside Dental Practice

Rating from 11 Reviews My teeth look completely naturalDaniel, Ireland, 08 Nov 15

I went to the practice to have a few fillings as well as having a metal filling replaced as it stood out to me and the work done was absolutely fantastic. Unlike some previous bad experiences I have had, there was no pain during the work and the results were amazing and also did not stand out. The teeth I have had filled do not look treated at all and look completely natural. I would highly recommend going to this clinic as it's the first dentist I've ever had such a brilliant experience with and the work performed is second to none. The experience I had in the clinic itself was also great. They were very quick and efficient when I went there with no long waits or time wasted. I was seen within ten minutes on my first visit and on subsequent visits it was often much shorter. The staff were very friendly and the clinic itself was very modern, clean and professional looking.
