Treatment for infection within the tooth

To prevent or reverse infection of badly damaged and decayed teeth, it may be necessary to carry out a root canal treatment. Though possessed of a fearsome reputation, the procedure is now well understood and produces excellent long lasting results with minimal discomfort.

What is Root Canal Treatment?

Tiny canals in your tooth become infected and can cause quite severe pain. The purpose of a root canal is to save a badly infected tooth. If not performed extraction of the tooth is commonly required. The infected canals are cleared then filled. It is quite common for the tooth to require a crown or a filling.

You might need a root canal if one or more of your teeth have become infected and there is severe damage to the pulp of your tooth.

Things to look out for include:

  • Although simple root canals can be performed by a general dentist, more complex root canals (such as those on your rear teeth) may require a specialised Endodontist.
  • Commonly a root canal treatment will require a crown as well. Be aware of this potential additional cost
  • Hugh advances in root canals have been made over the last decade,  so make sure your dentist is up to date
What is the procedure like?

The tooth has small canals filled with what is known as pulp: these reach right down into its root. The tooth’s canals may become infected and the pulp within them is first removed in a procedure referred to as a pulpotomy. The canals are then temporarily filled with an alkaline paste and the tooth is left to settle during which time the paste thoroughly disinfects the tooth.

A second appointment about a week afterwards is necessary to complete the procedure. The pulpotomy should remove any discomfort related to infection within the tooth. In the follow up the temporary paste is removed. The canals are filled with an inert material and the tooth should be given a protective crown to protect the work. The procedure is spread over two or more dental visits.

What affects the price?
  • The dentist selected
  • If a specialized endodontic is required
  • The position on of the tooth
  • The type of crown required (if any)

Eyre Square Dental Clinic

Rating from 13 Reviews Can't recommend highly enough!Ronan, Galway, 29 Oct 13

Full xrays, check up and thorough cleaning for €40 with pps number. Can't recommend highly enough!

Everything was very goodPaula, Galway, 31 Jan 14

I had a consultation. Seemed very thorough; he took x-rays and explained everything. The girls at reception were very friendly and did their best to get me an appointment that suited. They even offered to take me during their lunchtime. They are allowing me to spread the payments to make it fit my budget. Having treatment next week, but so far everything was very good.

Root canals €550  -  €650
When a deep cavity, decay or crack destroys the protective layers of enamel and dentine on your tooth, the hollow space within your tooth which contains the nerve tissue, is exposed to the bacteria in your mouth. This can result in inflammation, infection and death of the nerve tissue (pulp). During a root canal procedure a hole will be made in the top or back of your tooth to access the nerve tissue. X-rays and electronic instruments are used to determine the length of the canals. After the canals have been measured, your dentist will use specially designed nickel titanium instruments to clean out the diseased pulp. When the pulp has been removed, the canal is cleaned with an antiseptic solution, which helps to treat the source of the infection. Once the canals have been thoroughly cleaned and the dentist has made sure that the infection has been removed, the roots are sealed using the most up to date methods. A temporary filling is then placed to cover the new root filling. The crown of the tooth should then be restored with a permanent filling or crown as soon as possible.

Rating from 5 Reviews I'd recommend.Steve, Ireland, 08 Jul 16

Hi. Had a root canal that was competitively priced. I liked the dentist because I felt like he was treating me and not just looking for as much money as possible. He was professional, and the root canal took about one hour and fifteen minutes. I would return. Good clinic; would go back there. I'd recommend.

Very friendly. Well recommended!Miya, Ireland, 22 Oct 14

I have been in three times. First time like basic treatment, second and third time I do root canal. The whole process is comfortable, not painful. Thanks, Dr. Donal O'Mahony and assistant, Mary. Very friendly. Well recommended! I hope my next week therapy on the other side will go well.

I chose this clinic on recommendation from a friend. I had ongoing issues with fillings and crowns. I found O'Connor Moore to be the most competitive price wise and also exceptionally caring and professional. A very professional and caring practice. The girls on reception are lovely and make you feel at ease from the moment you arrive. The standard of hygiene is exceptional as is the state of the art equipment. I was advised throughout my treatment of what was happening and why and was constantly reassured by Dr Moore and the nursing staff. I would highly recommend O’Connor Moore Dental Practice to anyone.

Dr. Liam Ó Droma, B.D.S., N.U.I. - Dublin

2 Radharc an Oileáin, Harbour Road, Howth
Rating from 18 Reviews Always felt like I was making progress.John, Dublin, 25 Sep 15

I had a narrow palate with a cross-bite, and Liam first widened the palate with an expander and then the teeth were aligned with clear retainers. It was done over the course of a year, and I always felt like I was making progress. Liam is very knowledgeable and you feel like you're in good hands. The treatment was first class, and the plan was explained clearly as were any questions I had along the way. I also felt comfortable asking any questions that I had in relation to the treatment. All of the staff are also very friendly and helpful.

Quirke Dental Surgeons

Rating from 3 Reviews The dentist was thorough and explained everythingRuth, Ireland, 22 Sep 13

Dental X-Ray and extraction Having spent a night with my 6 year old in pain, I called QDS at 9am on Saturday morning and got an appointment for 12.30. We were seen at 12.25 which stopped anxiety building up. The dentist was thorough and explained everything to my child in child-friendly language and put him at ease every step of the way. He had to have an extraction and yet came out smiling! 1 day later now and no problems with pain or swelling.

I was given a quoteCarol, Bunclody Co. Wexford., 09 Aug 14

I was put at ease immediately by Ursula and given temporary treatment on a broken tooth. I have another appointment for root canal work when I return from my holiday. I was given a quote, so can't really comment on that until after 10th September.
