Treatment for infection within the tooth

To prevent or reverse infection of badly damaged and decayed teeth, it may be necessary to carry out a root canal treatment. Though possessed of a fearsome reputation, the procedure is now well understood and produces excellent long lasting results with minimal discomfort.

What is Root Canal Treatment?

Tiny canals in your tooth become infected and can cause quite severe pain. The purpose of a root canal is to save a badly infected tooth. If not performed extraction of the tooth is commonly required. The infected canals are cleared then filled. It is quite common for the tooth to require a crown or a filling.

You might need a root canal if one or more of your teeth have become infected and there is severe damage to the pulp of your tooth.

Things to look out for include:

  • Although simple root canals can be performed by a general dentist, more complex root canals (such as those on your rear teeth) may require a specialised Endodontist.
  • Commonly a root canal treatment will require a crown as well. Be aware of this potential additional cost
  • Hugh advances in root canals have been made over the last decade,  so make sure your dentist is up to date
What is the procedure like?

The tooth has small canals filled with what is known as pulp: these reach right down into its root. The tooth’s canals may become infected and the pulp within them is first removed in a procedure referred to as a pulpotomy. The canals are then temporarily filled with an alkaline paste and the tooth is left to settle during which time the paste thoroughly disinfects the tooth.

A second appointment about a week afterwards is necessary to complete the procedure. The pulpotomy should remove any discomfort related to infection within the tooth. In the follow up the temporary paste is removed. The canals are filled with an inert material and the tooth should be given a protective crown to protect the work. The procedure is spread over two or more dental visits.

What affects the price?
  • The dentist selected
  • If a specialized endodontic is required
  • The position on of the tooth
  • The type of crown required (if any)

O'Connor Moore Dental Practice

076 680 1055 Wine Street, Sligo
Rating from 23 Reviews Exceptionally caring and professionalJane, Ireland, 08 Jan 16

I chose this clinic on recommendation from a friend. I had ongoing issues with fillings and crowns. I found O'Connor Moore to be the most competitive price wise and also exceptionally caring and professional. A very professional and caring practice. The girls on reception are lovely and make you feel at ease from the moment you arrive. The standard of hygiene is exceptional as is the state of the art equipment. I was advised throughout my treatment of what was happening and why and was constantly reassured by Dr Moore and the nursing staff. I would highly recommend O’Connor Moore Dental Practice to anyone.

Had treatment with Patrick O'Connor and Caroline. Put me at ease as soon I walked into the room. Very good at explaining everything and even go as far as walking you to the door after a procedure. Very professional Staff. As soon as I walked into the clinic for my 1st ever appointment was met by Tanya. A lovely friendly personality that straight way put me at ease and always rings few times in advance let me know bout my next appointment. I could not praise this dentist practice enough. Patrick O'Connor and all the team are absolute brilliant at their work.

Dr. Liam Ó Droma, B.D.S., N.U.I. - Dublin

2 Radharc an Oileáin, Harbour Road, Howth
Rating from 16 Reviews Excellent resultsSalome, Ireland, 06 Jan 17

My son has been having orthodontic treatment with Dr Ó Droma for the last year with excellent results. He (as well as his assistant) is very kind and my son has always been happy to go for checkups, turning / wearing his appliance / retainer. We are nearing the end of the process, and I'm so glad we didn't wait until he was older as we originally considered. When I needed a crown done at short notice, I was seen quickly. Surprisingly (I am a very nervous patient), I found the visit not traumatic in the least, and I will have all future work done here. As far as value - for the quality of work and products used, I believe this is very good value. I initially chose the practice because the prices seemed lower than others in the area. For my son, the free consultation was good as it gave a better idea of what was needed and what it would cost. It didn't feel as if additional treatments would be suggested just for more profit. The practice doesn't look as swanky as many others in the area, but when it comes down to what is needed (plus new and modern equipment), this doesn't stand back in the least.

Attended Sinead Brennan at Crescent Dental for restorative work. Sinead was magnificent, I am so pleased with the outcome. From the very first consultation Sinead listened to what I wanted to achieve and delivered exactly what I wanted. I could not recommend Sinead highly enough. Committed and dedicated to her profession who talked me through the entire process step by step and advised what would be done at the next appointment. Well done.

Root canals €300  -  €500
*Prices include filling of root treated tooth. Our aim is to assist patients in retaining the natural dentition whenever possible and a very useful treatment for retaining badly brokendown or symptommatic teeth is root canal treatment. Root canal treatment is a procedure to remove the pulp (nerve) when it is either inflammed, dead or infected. The pulp extends along small canals inside the tooth. The pulp of a tooth can become damaged due to dental decay, trauma, fractures or leaking crowns and fillings. Where the damaged or dead pulp is not removed, it will often become infected and may result in a dental abscess. Root canal treatment is a pain free procedure and while there may be occasional post operative symptoms from this treatment the vast majority of cases resolve without post operative pain. Following root treatment it might be necessary to crown a tooth but this would be discussed before any treatment would commence.

Rating from 2 Reviews I was told how to protect my teeth and made welcomeAnita, UK, 17 Feb 16

I had a scale and polish completed with a review of the quality of my teeth. I was given hygiene education to personally look after my teeth tailored to my needs. I was also given written information for my dentist to have my teeth reviewed when I returned from my trip to Kerry. I felt the price was very good and Dr Mac Domhnail was very thorough. I was told how to protect my teeth and made welcome to return when I needed too. I was made to feel very welcome. And I booked my appointment whilst in the UK using email. I was replied to very quickly and professionaly. The clinic is very clean. Staff are very friendly and lovely atmosphere. Great location and plenty parking. Would recommend and I did to my family in Kerry .

Ivory Dental Care

(01) 901 0176 ext: 84155 2 Old Street, Malahide, Co Dublin
Rating from 7 Reviews Right choice to makeMaria, Ireland, 11 Feb 15

My past experience of dental treatment many years ago left me petrified of Dentists. I have recently had to seek treatment for extreme pain and after much deliberation and contact with practices, I chose Ivory Dental. My choice was based on my initial contact with the real feeling of understanding my fear. Having gone to the Surgery to meet Dr Nicola Zammit, she, and her team, worked with me to alleviate that fear and go forward for the necessary treatment which involved some work under sedation. Nicola and all the team were there every step of the way and I, as the patient, was the first priority. I have and will continue to sing their praises to my friends and family. Trust me, for someone who would not even walk past a Dentist Surgery, Ivory Dental is the right choice to make, only sorry I didn't do it sooner. Maria
