A guide to dentistry in the UK

The UK has some of the world's longest established medical and dental organizations. It has played a central role in shaping the ethical and scientific face of modern dental practice. The practice and structure of the profession in Britain serve as a model for many countries' dental profession.

Benefits of British Dentistry

Regular checkups are a vital part of good oral healthcare and a local dentist is by far the best choice. A trusting relationship with your local dentist has emmense benefits: dental emergencies can be dealt with by a healthcare professional who knows your medical history inside out. Even for more expensive treatments the value of this close working knowledge can far outweigh price considerations, ensuring an ongoing beneficial, oral regimen.

Dentists in the UK - Qualifications

A 5 year dental curriculum can be followed at any of UK's 13 dental schools. Successful graduates receive a Bachelor of Dental Science degree (BDS).

There are a large number of specialties that can be followed following standard dental practice including: Orthodontics, Prosthodontics, Periodontics and Endodontics.

Dentists in the UK - Patient Rights
Organizations

The General Dental Council regulates the dental profession in the UK. It keeps an up-to-date register of dental professionals: dentists, dental nurses, clinical dental technicians, dental hygienists, dental technicians, dental therapists, and orthodontic therapists.

The British Dental Association is the primary representative organization for dentists in the UK.

Dental Ethics

The General Dental Council publishes ethical guidelines for the profession. These cover a dentists duty to continually update their skills, promote dental health, their duty to the profession and their patients as well as the proper manner in which to advertise their services and how to charge for treatment. Failure to comply with these guidelines may result in censure, suspension or removal of the right to practice.

Continuing education

Mandatory, continuing education was introduced in 2001. 250 hours of training and seminars must be completed every 5 years to maintain the right to practice dentistry in the UK.

Complaints

There is a comprehensive system for dealing with complaints. The Dental Complaints Service (DCS) is the primary mechanism for patient complaints. Questions about a particular dentist's fitness to practice may be handled by the Professional Conduct Committee (PCC) and judged against the Fitness to Practise Procedures (FTP). These are all under the auspices of the General Dental Council.

Data Protection
The UK has an Information Commissioner's Office to deal with the protection of and access to personal data. These give advice and information on the implications to individuals of the Data Protection Act and the Freedom of Information Act.

Skin and Smiles at Whippendell Dental Clinic

(01) 901 0176 ext: 29182 18 Whippendell Road, Watford, WD18 7LU
Rating from 7 Reviews Highly recommendRobert, UK, 01 Aug 13

Full implants After visiting so many clinics for consultations for full implants, including the possibility of flying to Budapest to have all the work done (which they wanted cash), don't advise this! Visiting 2 Harley St clinics, Whippendell Dental Clinic was local and by far the most honest and realistic advise I had had! Dr Murgai was very reassuring and accommodating , I had work over 6 months every evening after my treatment I had a call to check how I was, the sessions were not rushed and overall am very happy , now my wife has decided to have some implants done as she saw how well the whole treatment went, thanks I will highly recommend the clinic for any dental procedures.

Brightside Dental

Rating from 10 Reviews Very efficient and highly professionalMarina, UK, 21 Oct 15

I had a few dental issues, chronic and urgent ones. I always had an opportunity to ask many questions and was provided with comprehensive and clear options of managing them. I was referred to hospital specialist when there was a need. I was offered an emergency appointment on the same day promptly when unfortunately I required one. All my family members are happy with the care they receive at the clinic. I have recommended it to my friends as well and they are pleased too. Very friendly and welcoming reception staff and practice manager. They have a very useful system of sending reminder for appointments or check. It is easy to get through on the phone to a pleasant receptionist. The waiting room is spotless and has useful and interesting information. There is even free Wi-Fi! If one have to wait but this almost never happens. Dentists are highly professional, they allow sufficient time to explain the problem and how it can be managed. Mr Shah, senior doctor, runs the practice very efficiently to a high standarts.

Aesthetique Dental Care

(01) 901 0176 ext: 67442 58 Merrion Centre, Leeds, LS2 8NG
Rating from 26 Reviews I can't stop smilingChristina, UK, 16 Dec 15

I don't often right reviews but it would be a complete disservice not to do one here. I've just completed a course of 6 months smiles treatment and am amazed at the results- I almost cried with joy when the braces came off. My teeth have been the bane of my life, they were crooked, chipped and mishapen, which had been made worse by botched othotics I had in my childhood. Not only did they look terrible, they made talking and eating difficult and dug into my lip causing pain. I had been told by other orthos I would need extremely unconformable, long winded and expensive treatment, but Fez and his team did quickly and for a much better price. I had been apprehensive about getting my teeth fixed but the team put me right at ease. Fez, Linda and Serita are the friendliest team ever with wacky taste in music. Unlike any other dentists I've had Fez always tells you what he is doing and why which makes treatment a lot less scary, he is gentle and makes the treatment as comfortable as possible. The braces themselves were great, hardly visible and worked wonders to sort out my extremely crooked teeth in record time. I got them at a better price than other places and the treatment was outstanding. I feel so much more confident, find eating easier and can't stop smiling. I feel like the team take great pride in their work and really care about how their customers feel. If you want your teeth fixing make sure you check Aesthetique out, I cannot recommend it highly enough.

Rating from 2 Reviews I will continue my treatment here because I trust them.Sandra, UK, 15 Nov 16

I had my wisdom teeth pulled and have some other problems. I was scared to go to the dentist but based on some other reviews I decided would give this place a try. The people are so kind and caring. My dentist explained what was happening with my teeth and gave me options. She also treated the immediate pain issue which helped so much until the day they would pull the wisdom teeth. The extraction was not painful at all and it was quick. I've also seen the hygienist there for cleaning and she is very gentle and always checking to make sure I was okay. I will continue my treatment here because I trust them. The clinic is very clean. The staff are professional, caring and respective of their patients. Even the receptionist checks on your well being. They made me feel at ease and I would recommend them to anyone.

Dental Solutions

(01) 901 0176 ext: 67930 9 Henry Street, Lymm, WA13 0LS
Rating from 14 Reviews Excellent dental care and adviceMrs, UK, 12 Jan 17

Largely as a result of the excellent dental care and advice I have received at Dental Solutions, I usually only require the regular 6-monthly check-up and visit to the hygienist. On the rare occasions when treatment has been required, it has always proved pain-free and effective, with minimal discomfort. Gavin and the staff always take time to discuss any concerns the patient may have, and treat patients with courtesy, consideration and total professionalism. Gavin became our family dentist at the Padgate practice, and when he moved to the private practice at Lymm we made the decision to travel there from North Warrington as he was such a good dentist. We continue to use the practice even though we now live in Weaverham near Northwich. I think that is a pretty good recommendation!

Cheltenham Dental Spa & Implant Clinic

(01) 901 0176 ext: 65024 1 Royal Crescent, Cheltenham, GL50 3DB
Rating from 9 Reviews I can crunch into a nice firm apple!Richard, UK, 20 May 15

I had 4 front teeth in my top jaw replaced with implants. My existing teeth were "mobile" (a dentist's euphemism for loose!), and I was unable to bite into anything more solid than a piece of bread. The treatment involved sedation to remove the existing teeth and put in the implants. Ghaleb was very patient and took his time to ensure everything was OK before proceeding to the next stage. The new implants are incredible! I can grin now without feeling self-conscious. And crunch in to a crisp firm apple! My general dentist recommended Ghaleb after advising that my 4 front teeth required specialist treatment. Throughout the whole treatment (which has taken over a year) I have been treated with the utmost courtesy and kindness. This is an amazing dental practice, and I would have no hesitation in recommending this practice (and Ghaleb) to anybody requiring any specialist treatment.
