A guide to dentistry in the UK

The UK has some of the world's longest established medical and dental organizations. It has played a central role in shaping the ethical and scientific face of modern dental practice. The practice and structure of the profession in Britain serve as a model for many countries' dental profession.

Benefits of British Dentistry

Regular checkups are a vital part of good oral healthcare and a local dentist is by far the best choice. A trusting relationship with your local dentist has emmense benefits: dental emergencies can be dealt with by a healthcare professional who knows your medical history inside out. Even for more expensive treatments the value of this close working knowledge can far outweigh price considerations, ensuring an ongoing beneficial, oral regimen.

Dentists in the UK - Qualifications

A 5 year dental curriculum can be followed at any of UK's 13 dental schools. Successful graduates receive a Bachelor of Dental Science degree (BDS).

There are a large number of specialties that can be followed following standard dental practice including: Orthodontics, Prosthodontics, Periodontics and Endodontics.

Dentists in the UK - Patient Rights
Organizations

The General Dental Council regulates the dental profession in the UK. It keeps an up-to-date register of dental professionals: dentists, dental nurses, clinical dental technicians, dental hygienists, dental technicians, dental therapists, and orthodontic therapists.

The British Dental Association is the primary representative organization for dentists in the UK.

Dental Ethics

The General Dental Council publishes ethical guidelines for the profession. These cover a dentists duty to continually update their skills, promote dental health, their duty to the profession and their patients as well as the proper manner in which to advertise their services and how to charge for treatment. Failure to comply with these guidelines may result in censure, suspension or removal of the right to practice.

Continuing education

Mandatory, continuing education was introduced in 2001. 250 hours of training and seminars must be completed every 5 years to maintain the right to practice dentistry in the UK.

Complaints

There is a comprehensive system for dealing with complaints. The Dental Complaints Service (DCS) is the primary mechanism for patient complaints. Questions about a particular dentist's fitness to practice may be handled by the Professional Conduct Committee (PCC) and judged against the Fitness to Practise Procedures (FTP). These are all under the auspices of the General Dental Council.

Data Protection
The UK has an Information Commissioner's Office to deal with the protection of and access to personal data. These give advice and information on the implications to individuals of the Data Protection Act and the Freedom of Information Act.

Rating from 26 Reviews Good experiencebernadette, UK, 12 Jul 16

Crowns done on upper teeth plus 2 crowns fitted also partial lower denture, several teeth extracted and fillings I can now smile with confidence and will never again have hand on mouth when having a picture taken, for someone terrified of dentists you can imagine how having all this work done felt like, but the care I received is second to none, the receptionist s are very kind and welcoming the dentist is very kind and caring would recommend aesthetique to everyone. In the centre of leeds I was able to have a lot of the treatment in my lunch hour, the rest I was able to have on a Saturday morning which is very helpful when you work full time.

Rating from 5 Reviews best dental experiences I have ever hadBrigitte, UK, 14 Feb 17

Sore gums and aching tooth on left side - had a miserable sleepless night. I was inflamed and in some pain and did not want anybody to go near me but Dr Leslie managed to inject the affected area without me feeling a thing - was so relieved and impressed. He has a really lovely manner and was one of the best dental experiences I have ever had.

The Edge Dental

(01) 525 5342 ext: 26053 6B london Road, Alderley Edge, SK97JS
Rating from 5 Reviews A real credit to their profession.Emma, UK, 26 Feb 17

Had root canal by my own dentist two weeks ago. I was left in extreme agony for a week until further treatment was performed again so serious was the pain, I collapsed with the pain, swelling and exhaustion. I went to The Edge to see Dentist Riz and his Dentist Partner Uzma. They took xrays and knew the tooth in question had 5 nerve canals to the one tooth. Riz felt he would successfully manage a root canal procedure and we commenced. Unfortunately whilst doing the procedure Riz and Uzma found that although the root canal would work, through their diligence and great dentistry, it was discovered my tooth was perforated by previous NHS dentist. Riz extracted as that was only option left, or major pain in a hospital. Riz took the tooth out with ease. Best extraction actually that I've ever had. I was in such pain for two weeks and complained profusely to NHS dentist to no avail. He performed root canal with no dam, lots of pain, no proper x rays. Riz and Uzma have literally saved my life. Wonderful. Riz and Uzma are without doubt the best dentists. If anybody is nervous, afraid and in pain or needs reassurance in the work previously done on their teeth then here is for them. I had travelled a distance to get to the clinic. Worth every penny. Clinic very clean, modern and topclass technology, both dentists are highly qualified and supberb bedside manner. A real credit to their profession. They even called home day after to check I was OK and healing well. Cannot thank them enough. I will be swapping from this point on, logistics or not.

Thurloe Street Dental

(01) 901 0176 ext: 66789 10 Thurloe Street, South Kensington, London, SW7 2ST
Rating from 15 Reviews Its beyond my imaginationKarolina, UK, 07 Feb 17

I had very twisted front teeth & opted for 6 months smile braces ( both arches). After 4 months Dr Raza said my front tooth were ready for braces to come off & fixed one of the front chipped tooth. I still have got brace on my lower arch but posting review now, because the effect is soo amazing that cant stop making pictures & showing off my teeth & getting so many compliments. Its beyond my imagination how beautiful my front teeth look now. Its not just effect of braces but the precision of the doctor and ability to make uneven teeth look pretty with minimum intervention. I also had wisdom tooth removed, general check up & filling at this clinic. The atmosphere is very relaxing, the communication throughout the treatment is very good and all staff is very friendly and family feeling like. Never thought would say dentist visit could be a pleasure, but it actually is:-) I highly recommend and am quite nervous patient. Great results exceeding expectation, relaxing atmosphere, very friendly staff, great location.

Dental Solutions

(01) 901 0176 ext: 67930 9 Henry Street, Lymm, WA13 0LS
Rating from 19 Reviews Always treated sympathetically and good explanations are givenCelia, UK, 28 Mar 17

Had to have a tooth out today . . . a last resort but unavoidable. So far, pain free. Always treated sympathetically and good explanations are given for the options available with advantages and disadvantages outlined. Have been attending this practice for many years (Hi Angus!). With advancing years, bone loss and resulting gum disease has been causing difficulties so I visit very regularly for hygienist appointments and check-ups. I am sure their care has enabled me to keep my teeth longer than less careful attention would have. High recommended.
