General, Laparoscopic and Transplant Surgeon Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons Staff Specialist Surgeon, Department of Surgery, Westmead Hospital. Dr Ryan is currently a staff specialist surgeon at Westmead Hospital, specializing in organ transplantation, dialysis access surgery and laparoscopic general surgery.He also works as a consultant surgeon at Norwest Private, Westmead Private and Campbelltown Private Hospitals. Dr Ryan is a medical graduate of Monash University, Melbourne and became a fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in 2003. He spent 2 years working overseas in the National Kidney and Pancreas Transplant Unit in Dublin, Ireland and returned in 2006 to take up his transplant surgical appointment at Westmead Hospital. Dr Ryan has a special interest in laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery, in particular laparoscopic hernia repairs, cholecystectomy (gallbladder), & fundoplication (antireflux surgery) .He performs laparoscopic gastric banding separately through his affiliation with the Australian Institute of Weight Control. Dr Ryan is involved in continual education in his surgical field and committed to the process of audit review in surgical practice.

Studied medicine as an undergraduate at the University of Newcastle Upon-Tyne, England and trained in general and transplantation surgery in the North East of England, Edinburgh Scotland and Sydney Australia. He has published and presented widely on transplantation and has an MD investigating Xenotransplantation. He is a conjoint associate professor within the University of Sydney. His specialty interests are liver and pancreatic surgery in addition to laparoscopic surgery. He is a senior staff specialist surgeon at Westmead Hospital and the surgical head of The Australian National Pancreas Transplant Program based there. In addition he is a VMO surgeon at Westmead Private Hospital and a VMO liver transplant surgeon at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital. Research Interests: Professor Pleass has strong interest in liver and pancreatic surgery as well as laparoscopic surgery

Medical graduate of the University of New South Wales and during his undergraduate years spent 18 months as a research fellow at the J.Jacobs Centre for Thrombosis and Vascular Biology at the Cleveland Clinic, Ohio USA. He did his internship, residency and general surgical training through the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, Sydney and was admitted as a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in 2010. He spent his first year of post fellowship training at Westmead Hospital, Sydney in kidney and pancreas transplantation, including multiorgan retrieval. He spent his second post fellowship year in kidney and liver transplantation and hepatopancreaticobiliary surgery at the Princess Alexandra Hospital, Brisbane. He is currently a staff specialist general and transplant surgeon at Westmead hospital and is a VMO surgeon at Norwest Private and Westmead Private hospitals.
