Sleeve Gastrectomy is weight loss procedure aimed at permanently removing 75% of the stomach to make it smaller. This means you will only be able to eat small meals. Your surgeon will explain the benefits and risks of having a sleeve gastrectomy, and will also discuss the alternatives to this operation. This is a keyhole operation that requires a general anaesthetic. You should expect to be in hospital for 1-2 days and the surgeon will discuss this with you. The operation involves converting the stomach into a long, thin tube by stapling it along its length and removing the excess stomach. As the stomach is smaller, it is able to hold less food and water and gives a feeling of fullness and satisfaction after eating. The result is that patients who have had this procedure want to eat less and therefore lose weight. In addition, the appetite may be reduced following a sleeve gastrectomy due to a change in some of the hormones. After the operation, you will need to take a daily multivitamin tablet (can be bought over the counter), daily calcium and vitamin D tablet, daily iron tablet and 3-monthly Vitamin B12 injections via the GP.

I had the gastric sleeve at Oasis in Tijuana with Dr. Green. From beginning to end, the experience was so worth it. Dr. Green was amazing— I got a picture of my stomach that he cut out, and it was so interesting. He gave me his personal number so if I had any questions, he could answer them. I did have a couple, and he answered them professionally and within minutes! I had zero complications. The hospital is kind of sketchy, but everyone knows what they are doing. The hotel was absolutely beautiful, though, and throughout my time, I felt well cared for. I have lost 60 pounds in less than 5 months! I can’t believe I paid so little for such a major, major positive change in my life.

VSG /Sleeve gastrectomy, also known as vertical sleeve gastrectomy, is a  procedure that restricts food intake in order to facilitate weight loss. Surgeons at MBC  have bee performing this procedure of the last 8 years laparoscopically, and remove approximately 85 percent of the stomach, leaving behind a small tube or "sleeve." Because the size of the stomach is dramatically reduced during this procedure, MBC gastric sleeve surgery patients cannot consume the same amount of food that they could pre-operatively. Over time, the restriction of calories and food intake, results in significant weight loss.   In addition, the removal of a portion of the stomach actually eliminates some of the hormones which can stimulate hunger. However, unlike other stomach stapling procedure, all of the stomach’s functions are preserved. This means that there are far fewer restrictions on the foods that patients can consume after the procedure. The amount of food that patients can consume, however, is considerably limited. As with all surgical weight loss programs, it is imperative that gastric sleeve patients adhere to a strict postoperative diet. Once goal weight is achieved, usually 1–2 years after surgery, most patients can consume about 1000–1200 calories per day. Had my gastric sleeve surgery done by Dr Lockie in 2018 and have never looked back. Sorry I haven't put a review on sooner. My husband and I were travelling around Australia at the time so they managed to fast-track everything for me to fit in with our travel plans. Loved every minute of my journey, from the original consult with the team, who were all so friendly and knowledgeable to the surgery itself. Dr Lockie was so amazing and fixed my hiatus hernia (which he found at the pre-op procedures) at the same time, which had caused me problems for years. My life has now changed for the better, I am just under 30kgs lighter and never regret a moment, every penny was a penny well spent. Best decision of my life. Gastric Sleeve surgery reduces appetite (hunger) and the amount of food eaten. Appetite is reduced because the part of stomach that produces the hunger hormone  ghrelin is removed. A stomach reduced  in size to  100-150 ml / 3.4-5 fl. oz. as opposed to the normal size of 1500 ml / 50 fl. oz. fills up remarkably more quickly and the feeling of satiety is achieved by swallowing just a couple of mouthfuls. Also the  faster flow of food from the stomach’s tube to the small intestine plays a role in the reduction of appetite, as the small intestine’s contact with freshly swallowed food amplifies the feeling of a full stomach. The main difference of sleeve gastrectomy compared with bypass surgery is that, in the case of gastric sleeve, food still flows through every part of the digestive system and therefore the absorption of nutrients (including vitamins and minerals) and medications is not affected. After the surgery, the stomach and duodenum can still be examined laparoscopically , which is important for patients with certain types of stomach and biliary diseases.
