1. Initial Visit and Examination At your first visit, Ladenta Doctor will examine your teeth, jaws, and facial relationships for any problems and give you a full explanation of the situation. While this first exam does not always result in immediate treatment, it allows the doctor to determine how and when a patients particular problem should be treated for maximum improvement. 2. Diagnostic Evaluation Next, orthodontic records such as x-rays, photos, and impressions are taken so that Ladenta Doctor can judge the extent of the problem and develop a treatment plan. 3. Placement of Braces Compared to the "good old days" when each tooth was fit with bands to obtain the correct size - a time consuming and difficult process - braces today are applied to the front surface of the tooth. Usually the patient does not even feel them being placed!!! Our finely trained treatment staff then explains about how to care for your new braces.4. Periodic Appointments After the braces are placed, regular appointments are scheduled every 4 to 8 weeks to monitor your progress and make adjustments to your braces. These visits usually involve re-tying or changing the "archwire" to continue straightening your teeth. Many patients will "pick colors" to highlight, rather than conceal, their braces. How Do Braces Work?In their entirety, braces work by applying continuous pressure over a period of time to slowly move teeth in a specific direction. As the teeth move, the bone changes shape as pressure is applied. Braces are made up of the following components: Brackets are the small squares that are bonded directly to the front of each tooth with a special dental bonding agent or are attached to orthodontic bands. Brackets act like handles, holding the arch wires that move the teeth. There are several types of brackets, including stainless steel and tooth-colored ceramic or plastic, which are often selected because they’re less obvious. Occasionally, brackets are cemented to the back of teeth, in order to hide them from view.Orthodontic bands are stainless steel, clear, or tooth-colored materials that are cemented to the teeth with dental bonding agents. They wrap around each tooth to provide an anchor for the brackets. The clear or tooth-colored bands are more cosmetically appealing options but are more expensive than stainless steel. They are not used in all patients. Some people have only brackets and no bands.Spacers are separators that fit between teeth to create a small space prior to placement of orthodontic bands.Arch wires attach to the brackets and act as tracks to guide the movement of the teeth. In order to prevent the teeth moving back to their original position, may be worn once the treatment with braces is complete for the patient depending on their specific needs. Retainers help in maintaining and stabilizing the position of teeth long enough to permit reorganization of the supporting structures after active phase of orthodontic therapy. If the patient does not wear the braces appropriately for the right amount of time, the teeth may move towards their previous position. For regular traditional braces Hawley retainers are used. They are made of metal hooks that surround the teeth and are enclosed by an acrylic plate shaped to fit the patient's palate. For invisalign braces an Essix retainer is used. They are similar to the regular invisalign braces and is a clear plastic tray that is firmly fitted to the teeth that stays in place, and does not have a plate fitted to the palate.
