What is a Dental Crown?

A dental crown is a tooth shaped covering used as a cap over damaged teeth. The purpose of placing a crown is to improve the appearance and strength of the damaged tooth. Crowns are also placed over surgically inserted dental implants.

What are the different types of Dental Crowns?

The types of dental crowns include ceramic crowns, zirconia crowns, porcelain covered corrosion resistant metal crowns or porcelain fused to metal crowns, corrosion resistant metal crowns and gold crowns.

What is the best type of crown?

The best type of crown depends on the need of each individual patient and the position of the tooth. For instance, some people would find a gold crown placed on a front tooth unsightly. Ceramic, tooth coloured crowns placed on the front teeth maintain the natural appearence of the smile.

How long will a Dental Crown last?

Crowns are expected to last for about 5 years. Some crowns could last for up to 30 years. The life of a crown depends on the dental hygiene practiced by the patient and general wear and tear caused by biting, chewing or grinding. Crowns may crack if the patient has an accident.

Is it painful to get a Dental Crown?

Dentists inject local anaesthetic to numb the tooth and gum before placing the crown. The patient will not feel any pain while the crown is being placed. After the anaesthetic wears off the patient may feel mild pain or sensitivity for a few hours.

It was removed a wisdom tooth and few weeks later it was necessary to remove another tooth that had created troubles years ago I can't recommend Perfect Smile (Mullingar) highly enough! I found the reception staff friendly, helpful and accommodating. The dental care that I received from Dr. Orry Tornsney was excellent and very professional. I would recommend this Dentist and practice to others.

There are many types of crowns however most used are; porcelain, metal and porcelain fused metal and zirconia. Porcelain fused metal are be stronger near the gum-line than porcelain, however today we can make them out of all porcelain, meaning that they can look very esthetic and very natural. Zirconia crowns can also look beautiful and very natural. Zirconia is an extra tough ceramic material, and it can be made extra thin.

Rating from 1 Review Gave me some advice after wisdom tooth consultationSarah, Ireland, 28 Aug 15

I had an infection in the soft tissue around my wisdom tooth so the dentist examined me and gave me a prescription for 2 antibiotics. He also gave me some advice as to where I needed to go from there and that I'd more than likely need the tooth removed. I have a fear of the dentist but as soon as I walked into the dentists room I felt way more at ease because of how friendly and approachable they were. I left feeling happy and knowing that I will be a lot less nervous about going back for another appointment.

Rating from 9 Reviews The were really calming, nice and caring and the fees were moderateSeamus, Roscommon, 28 Jul 17

I visited the Bolands dental practice in Athlone. Ths was my first visit in over 30 years as I am terrified of them. My teeth needed cleaning and possible fillings. My experience went from being really anxious to complete relaxation in minutes. Dr. Elizabeth (Liz) as she wants to be called and her super staff were incredible. The were really calming, nice and caring and the fees were moderate. They are an absolute credit to the dental profession. Thanks again.

My whole experience was pleasant and comfortableAisling, Ireland, 14 Apr 17

Coole Dental Surgery

Rating from 3 Reviews Go see these people you will be so glad you didJune, Ireland, 29 Oct 16

Hadn't been to a dentist in a very long time - root canal on one tooth two other fillings so not so bad really - terrified hence not wanting to go. It was the call from the receptionist that got me there - she promised me there would be no judgement. only support and she was so right - cannot recommend them highly enough. If you already see a dentist, haven't been in years for one reason or another or just have a tooth that doesn't feel quite right go see these people you will be so glad you did.

the dentist is very good with nervous patientsSusan, Ireland, 24 May 17

I visited this dentist for a root canal and 2 fillings. I had not been to a dentist in a very long time, as I had a very bad experience elsewhere. I rang the clinic in the morning in quite a lot of pain. The lady at reception was very nice, friendly and helpful. She made an appointment for me for the same day and reassured me that Michael the dentist was very good with nervous patients. When I got there and had my treatment I was very impressed with the dentist and his staff. I would highly recommend visiting the clinic.
