Treatment for infection within the tooth

To prevent or reverse infection of badly damaged and decayed teeth, it may be necessary to carry out a root canal treatment. Though possessed of a fearsome reputation, the procedure is now well understood and produces excellent long lasting results with minimal discomfort.

What is Root Canal Treatment?

Tiny canals in your tooth become infected and can cause quite severe pain. The purpose of a root canal is to save a badly infected tooth. If not performed extraction of the tooth is commonly required. The infected canals are cleared then filled. It is quite common for the tooth to require a crown or a filling.

You might need a root canal if one or more of your teeth have become infected and there is severe damage to the pulp of your tooth.

Things to look out for include:

  • Although simple root canals can be performed by a general dentist, more complex root canals (such as those on your rear teeth) may require a specialised Endodontist.
  • Commonly a root canal treatment will require a crown as well. Be aware of this potential additional cost
  • Hugh advances in root canals have been made over the last decade,  so make sure your dentist is up to date
What is the procedure like?

The tooth has small canals filled with what is known as pulp: these reach right down into its root. The tooth’s canals may become infected and the pulp within them is first removed in a procedure referred to as a pulpotomy. The canals are then temporarily filled with an alkaline paste and the tooth is left to settle during which time the paste thoroughly disinfects the tooth.

A second appointment about a week afterwards is necessary to complete the procedure. The pulpotomy should remove any discomfort related to infection within the tooth. In the follow up the temporary paste is removed. The canals are filled with an inert material and the tooth should be given a protective crown to protect the work. The procedure is spread over two or more dental visits.

What affects the price?
  • The dentist selected
  • If a specialized endodontic is required
  • The position on of the tooth
  • The type of crown required (if any)

When a deep cavity, decay or crack destroys the protective layers of enamel and dentine on your tooth, the hollow space within your tooth which contains the nerve tissue, is exposed to the bacteria in your mouth. This can result in inflammation, infection and death of the nerve tissue (pulp). During a root canal procedure a hole will be made in the top or back of your tooth to access the nerve tissue. X-rays and electronic instruments are used to determine the length of the canals. After the canals have been measured, your dentist will use specially designed nickel titanium instruments to clean out the diseased pulp. When the pulp has been removed, the canal is cleaned with an antiseptic solution, which helps to treat the source of the infection. Once the canals have been thoroughly cleaned and the dentist has made sure that the infection has been removed, the roots are sealed using the most up to date methods. A temporary filling is then placed to cover the new root filling. The crown of the tooth should then be restored with a permanent filling or crown as soon as possible.

I have been in three times. First time like basic treatment, second and third time I do root canal. The whole process is comfortable, not painful. Thanks, Dr. Donal O'Mahony and assistant, Mary. Very friendly. Well recommended! I hope my next week therapy on the other side will go well.

I'd recommend.Steve, Ireland, 08 Jul 16

Hi. Had a root canal that was competitively priced. I liked the dentist because I felt like he was treating me and not just looking for as much money as possible. He was professional, and the root canal took about one hour and fifteen minutes. I would return. Good clinic; would go back there. I'd recommend.

Rating from 13 Reviews A great dentist and really gentle.Aoife, dublin, 02 Jun 15

I would really recommend this clinic. I had a root canal done on a molar tooth. With Hannah, I found her to be an excellent dentist and really gentle too. She would be great for nervous patients. It cost 550E and was done over 2 appointments. I found this to be a very professional and friendly clinic. Everything was explained before going ahead with treatment. I would really recommend this clinic. When I first contacted the clinic, they said I could call in for them to assess the tooth and they didn't charge. Everyone is very friendly and welcoming. The treatment was really good and Hannah is a great dentist.

Rating from 10 Reviews I will certainly be recommending this clinic to allAnonymous, Bunratty, 08 May 16

I first attended Dr. Kamilla Trofimiuk in April 2013 and I found her to be a wonderful lady - very personable and yet professional. She offers patients her expert advice without applying any pressure whatsoever. I had nine porcelain crowns fitted and am absolutely delighted with the result. I couldn't praise Dr. Kamilla enough and it's the first time I have had complete faith in my dentist. I will certainly be recommending this clinic to all. Very relaxing atmosphere.

Charging for work not for talkAlesja, Ireland, 29 Sep 15

Very professional, qualified, good doctor. Even speaking my language. Kind and nice person. Interesting in conversation. Started treatment at the arranged time. Easy going treatment without any pressure. Very satisfied. Found this clinic through internet. Was looking for some one professional experienced who is working with most teeth treatments for normal prices. Charging for work not for talk. Clinic was easy to find. It's nice clean and comfortable.

Rating from 10 Reviews He persevered and now due to my treatment my migraines are much improvedAngelia, Ireland, 04 May 17

Splint, root canal, crowns all because I grind my teeth and also suffer from debilitating migraine, that along with a huge fear of dentists - due to this fear it took time for me to become comfortable with Conor. He persevered and now due to my treatment my migraines are much improved. The splint protects my teeth and finally I have teeth that I am comfortable with. I must mention Alex - Conor's nurse is very professional and friendly. A work colleague's recommendation was the best advise I ever took. Pristine and relaxing waiting room. Very friendly and approachable team at the front desk.
