What are Veneers?

Veneers are thin shells, also called dental laminates, that are used to cover unsightly teeth and give patients attractive smiles. They are easy to place and can quickly improve the smile of patients with dental cracks and stains, and for patients who have gaps between their teeth.

What is the difference between Veneers and Dental Crowns?

Veneers cover only the front portion of teeth. Crowns cover or replace the entire tooth. Crowns are therefore thicker than veneers. A major portion of the tooth needs to be reduced before placing a crown while only a small portion of the tooth needs to be reduced before placing a veneer. A crown is used for covering damaged teeth and is also placed over a dental implant. A veneer is only used for cosmetic purposes.

What are the best types of Veneers?

The best type of veneer depends on the needs of each individual patient. Some veneers can be easily placed without much tooth preparation. Some veneers are suitable for severely damaged teeth. Some veneers can be easily made in the clinic and patients do not have to wait long for their placement. Some veneers are cheaper than others and are suitable for patients looking for a low cost option.  Your dentist should discuss the options with you so you can make the best choice.

How long before you can eat after getting Veneers?

Dentists recommend that patients eat only soft foods after veneers are placed, and for the first few days, until they get used to them. Veneers are normally bonded firmly to teeth and patients can eat any type of food.

What are Veneers made from?

Veneers are made from ceramic, composite resins or zirconium.

Dr. Liam Ó Droma, B.D.S., N.U.I. - Dublin

2 Radharc an Oileáin, Harbour Road, Howth
Rating from 28 Reviews Good value for money and not to forget his emphasis on keeping up-to-date on implantology treatmentWerner, Ireland, 22 Jul 18

Most important point first: From experience with an implant (lower left 5). I can highly recommend Dr Liam Ó Droma. Excellence in all aspects. The consultation, advise preparation, treatment through all stages, first-class material, good value for money and not to forget his emphasis on keeping up-to-date on implantology treatments. I am not a newcomer to implants, I had a number of those done over the past 10 years, but none in Ireland, they were simply far too expensive here at the time. Most were done in Germany in a specialised, fairly high-tech clinic in Germany. Including flights and all still a lot cheaper than what I had found here. When a new problem appeared in 2017. I found Liam's clinic on the internet with a competitive offer and he fitted me in pretty quickly in his surgery in An Spidéal, Co. Galway. When approaching, you may be forgiven not to expect a first-class implant specialist working in what looks a bit like a "timber hut". What I saw inside was modern high-tech equipment standing idle and an assortment of second-hand armchairs in a tiny waiting room. When you are in the dentist's chair and Liam looks deep through his oversized looking glasses, you know you are in the right hands. He does not need high-tech and he knows what he is doing! After the crown was fitted, I have had no problem whatsoever. It pretty much feels like an original tooth, it fitted perfectly first time and did not need any adjustments. A most impressive proof of skilfulness. What I also found most amazing was how little blood was lost. I remember previous procedures when I looked like having been in a bad fist-fight. Blood all over and stitches having to be taken out later. Not so here; after the initial root extraction, there is hardly any bleeding. Thanks to his minimally invasive method and no stitches at all. Just a quick word on waiting times: yes, I also had to wait, and so had other patients when I was in treatment. Somewhere else, I had the experience of having an implant done in a "normal" dental practice working to strict timeslots. You did not have to wait long before treatment started, but it then got interrupted, restarted, interrupted again, and so on. I think normal dental work of check-ups, fillings and implants with potential complications do not mix well. I will rather patiently wait for an hour in the waiting room, but then have the uninterrupted attention when being treated. This is what Liam is doing. Thanks to all around Liam, Barbara, Arlene, Susanne and all. I found the clinic in An Spidéal, Co. Galway, through the internet search. It is in a beautiful area, but not terribly easy to get to from afar. As I said above, when approaching, you may be forgiven not to expect a first-class implant specialist working in what looks a bit like a "timber hut" at the back of a medical care centre. Outside the treatment room and ignoring a computer or two, the clinic has the charm of a kind of "old-worldly" mid-50s place.

Flynns Dental Care

076 680 5297 7 Cathair Danann, North Circular Road, Tralee
Rating from 20 Reviews Altogether a very pleasant experiencePhil, Ireland, 29 Jun 18

Having had false teeth for almost 50 years, replacing a failing set. Particularly the bottom teeth were going to be a challenge and so it proved. Hannah Flynn was not only extremely professional in ensuring the dentures looked right and fitted well. She was also very personable, easy to talk to and I can imagine she would put anyone at their ease. After the final fitting, I had to go back twice in a two week period for minor adjustments where my mouth had changed since the impressions. The dentures are now excellent. Given that the treatment was on a medical card, there was no difference in the way the work or the visits were handled to the way they would have been if I had been paying. Altogether a very pleasant experience. My wife has been using Flynn's for almost 20 years. The clinic is bright, modern, the reception staff/nurses are friendly, helpful and the care is excellent.

South Dublin Dental

Rating from 14 Reviews The dentist explained everything before he did it, and I didn’t feel any pain during the procedureElaine, South Africa, 12 Jan 18

I went to South Dublin Dental to have a bridge inserted. This practice was recommended to me by someone else. I paid the price I found on the website, and I think the treatment was worth the money. The clinic was clean, and the dentist himself was rather pleasant. I’m someone who’s always going to be really anxious at a dentist appointment, but he managed to make me feel completely at ease. The dentist explained everything before he did it, and I didn’t feel any pain during the procedure. As far as dentist appointments go, it was a good experience.

Donnybrook Dental Practice

114 Morehampton Road, Donnybrook, Dublin, Dublin 4
Rating from 5 Reviews The best I've been to.Philip, Ireland, 03 Jun 15

Very thorough exam with some great advice. Excellent manner. I had X-rays taken and a bit of filling on premolar. Might need root canal if nerve dies; advised to wait a few weeks and see if it settles. He charged 50 Euros - amazingly cheap for all the time and work done. I will recommend this clinic to my family and friends. 10/10 The clinic was recommended by a friend and was easy to find with lots of parking close by. The staff are very friendly and the young dentist obviously loves his job and cares for his patients. The best and cheapest I have ever been to in Dublin.
