Biography:
Dr James Leong is a vitreoretinal surgeon and medical retina specialist. Dr Leong completed his medical training at The University of Sydney. He graduated with honours and was awarded the Royal Australian College of Ophthalmologists Prize and undergraduate Medal for Ophthalmology. In addition he was awarded the Clarence and Mabel Clark Prize in Ophthalmology. After completing a Masters of Medicine in Ophthalmic Sciences Dr Leong undertook his specialist ophthalmology training at Sydney Eye Hospital. Subsequently Dr Leong completed two international fellowships including a Vitreoretinal Surgical Fellowship associated with the University of British Columbia, Canada and a Medical Retina Fellowship at Moorfields Eye Hospital, London. He was awarded the Sydney Hospitallers Norman Rose Travelling Scholarship and the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmology Study Scholarship. Dr Leong has published numerous articles in peer reviewed ophthalmic journals and authored a number of textbook chapters. He has also been involved as a sub-investigator in a number of international clinical trials. With both medical and surgical retina expertise Dr Leong has a particular interest in age related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, retinal vein occlusions, macular holes, epiretinal membranes and retinal detachments. Dr Leong places an emphasis on the patient doctor relationship, ensuring his patients have a good understanding of their condition and access to the latest treatment options available. Having grown up and living in the Shire, Dr Leong is dedicated to be bringing a high level of expertise and surgical skills to the residents of The Sutherland Shire and Illawarra.

Adrian Fung

Biography:
Dr Adrian Fung is a vitreoretinal surgeon and macular disease specialist. He also has expertise in tumours of the retina and choroid. Dr Fung graduated in medicine from the University of New South Wales with first class Honours, before completing both a Master of Medicine in Ophthalmic Science and a Master of Medicine with merit in Clinical Epidemiology at the University of Sydney. He undertook ophthalmology training at The Sydney Eye Hospital where he was elected as the Professorial Senior registrar and won the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists (RANZCO) Filipic Greer Award for highest mark in Advanced Pathology. He was the national Senior Trainee Group spokesperson for the RANZCO Council and Federal Quality & Education Committees. Dr Fung completed the William H. Ross Vitreoretinal Surgical Fellow at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada, being awarded both the RANZCO Allergan and Sydney Hospitallers Norman Rose Travelling Scholarships. During this time he became an expert in managing surgical retinal diseases. He then completed the LuEsther T Mertz Medical Retina Fellowship at Vitreous Retina Macula Consultants of New York and the Manhattan Eye & Ear Hospital, New York, USA. Working under the supervision of world-renowned specialists Professor Lawrence Yannuzzi and Dr Bailey Freund, he was trained in medical retinal diseases. He has also been a research scholar in uveitis at Bascom Palmer Eye Hospital, Miami, USA (voted best ophthalmology hospital in the USA since 2004) and in ocular oncology with Professors Jerry and Carol Shields at the Wills Eye Hospital, Philadelphia, USA (the largest oncology unit in the world). He has written 6 books or book chapters, including “Ophthalmic Clinical Examination- The Sydney Eye Hospital Registrars’ Manual” and “Vitreoretinal Surgery for Trainees- The University of British Columbia and Sydney Eye Hospital Manual. He has published over 35 manuscripts in major international ophthalmology journals, including Ophthalmology, Archives of Ophthalmology and Retina and is a reviewer for several of these. He has presented at international ophthalmic meetings, and is a member of RANZCO, ANZSRS, ORA, AAO, ASRS and ARVO. Dr Fung continues to conduct clinical research and is involved as an investigator in international clinical trials. He particularly enjoys being involved in medical student and post-graduate teaching. He is a senior clinical lecturer at the University of Sydney and Macquarie University. His interests include epiretinal membrane, macular hole, retinal detachment, macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, retinal vascular occlusions, and retinal and choroidal tumours.

Dr Michael Chilov

Biography:
Dr Michael Chilov is a retina and macular subspecialist. His particular interests are macula degeneration, diabetic retinopathy and vein occlusion. After completing a Bachelor of Optometry degree at UNSW, he went on to study Medicine at the University of Sydney. His ophthalmology training was at Sydney Eye Hospital followed by sub-specialty fellowship training in medical retina at Bristol Eye Hospital in the UK. He is involved in a number of international clinical trials investigating the latest treatments for macula degeneration, diabetic retinopathy and retinal vein occlusion and is able to bring this knowledge to his patients. He has written a number of peer reviewed publications and regularly peer reviews journal articles that have been submitted for publication. Dr Chilov is a Consultant at Concord Hospital where he is involved in the training of ophthalmology specialists-in-training in the diagnosis and treatment of retinal conditions and cataract surgery. He is a Clinical Associate Lecturer at the University of Sydney and Member of the Australian and New Zealand Society of Retina Specialists (ANZSRS) and American Society of Retinal Specialists (ASRS). Dr Chilov places great importance on the patient doctor relationship, making sure he gives his patients and their families answers to their questions. He ensures that his patients have the latest information about their treatment options and collaborates with them to formulate a clear treatment plan.

Dr Raj Chalasani

Biography:
Dr Raj Chalasani is a retinal specialist with an interest in macular disease. Raj was born and educated in Sydney. He completed his undergraduate medical training at the University of NSW, graduating with First Class Honours. Following his internship and junior medical years at Concord Hospital in Sydney, Raj worked as a medical registrar at St-Vincent’s Hospital Sydney, and at Broken Hill Hospital and Shoalhaven District Memorial Hospital. Raj did advanced specialist training in ophthalmology at two of Australia’s premier ophthalmic institutions – Sydney Eye Hospital and the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital in Melbourne. He also completed a comprehensive fellowship in Medical Retina and Uveitis at Bristol Eye Hospital, one of the longest established and best known ophthalmic hospitals in the United Kingdom. Raj is a Fellow of The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists, a member of the Australian and New Zealand Society of Retinal Specialists, and a Staff Specialist at Westmead Hospital Sydney. He is experienced in the medical management of all aspects of retinal disease, and has been actively involved in a number of major international clinical trials researching diseases of the retina. He is also committed to teaching, and contributes to the training of medical students, optometrists and general practitioners. Raj’s major interests outside ophthalmology include cricket and indoor cricket, as well as following the Sydney Swans, Manly Sea Eagles, and NSW Waratahs. He has a keen interest in medical technology and completed a Masters in Biomedical Engineering degree through the University of NSW. Raj is a lifetime member of St John Ambulance Australia, and has been involved in the provision of first aid and medical services to numerous public events.

Biography:
Dr. Simon Nothling specialises in Medical Retina and Uveitis. He graduated from the University of New South Wales in 2001 with First Class Honours. Prior to his Ophthalmology training, he worked for 4-5 years as a Medical Senior House Officer in Australia and the United Kingdom in various medical specialties, such as Rheumatology and Neurology. He began his general Ophthalmic training in 2009 at Sydney Eye Hospital, which lasted 4.5 years. After his training in Sydney, he then undertook a Medical Retina and Uveitis fellowship at the world renowned Moorfields Eye Hospital, London. This fellowship lasted 12 months during 2013/14. At Moorfields, he gained considerable experience managing medical retinal conditions such as Age Related Macula Degeneration, Retinal Vein Occlusions and Diabetic Retinopathy, as well as Uveitic and inflammatory conditions of the eye. Simon has also been involved in various large international ophthalmic trials during his time at Moorfields. Outside of work, Simon is a very keen sportsman. He played club rugby union in Sydney for quite a few years, and is a recent Australian surf swimming champion. Surfing is also one of his passions and he has surfed some of the best surf breaks in the world. He has also worked voluntarily as a doctor in some of the remote islands of Indonesia and Fiji.

Biography:
Dr Dov Hersh is a highly qualified, professional and caring ophthalmologist with sub-specialty training in medical retina. After completing specialist qualification in Australia (FRANZCO), Dr Hersh undertook a further 2.5 years of sub-specialty training in medical retina at two of Europe’s premiere eye institutions, Bristol Eye Hospital and Moorfields Eye Hospital, London. During his fellowship Dr Hersh trained with pioneers in the field. He is particularly interested in the management of macular degeneration, diabetic eye disease and retinal vein occlusions. Dr Hersh is also fellowship trained in comprehensive oculoplastics. Having been an investigator in multiple phase II/III multi-national clinical trials studying new treatments, Dr Hersh keeps up-to-date with the latest advances. Similarly, he has published research papers in peer-reviewed journals and has presented lectures in Australia and internationally. Prior to his medical career Dov gained a B.Com, specialising in IT. As a medical student he established telemedicine projects in developing countries. In recognition of his effort Dr Hersh was nominated by colleagues and was awarded semi-finalist for young Australian of the Year. Dr Hersh understands the importance of listening to his patients needs and takes pride in keeping up-to-date with the evidence and latest advances in ophthalmology so he can tailor management to each patient.
