Root canal treatment removes the infected pulp and disinfects the pulp chamber thereby stopping the spread and formation of further infection. This helps to retain the teeth in its natural form.

I can't miss out on letting this day go without sharing my experience once again with my Dentist Niall McCarthy (Burren Dental Clinic), I could not and did not visit a dentist since I was very young because of a very bad experience I had with our School Dentist many moons ago...until Niall was recommended to me, I just cannot say enough about him and his staff, he took me from a very dark place where Dentistry was concerned to a now lovely experience and I mean that. From the get-go, he made me feel so relaxed and spoke and discussed every aspect of my treatment and most importantly TOTALLY pain/hurt free, something I never experienced with the Dentist. Any person that is anyway nervous, I promise you will not regret a visit to Niall's practice. Thank you, Niall and a big thanks to his staff who made me feel so relaxed. Root canal treatment is the preferred way to treat an infection in the nerve center of the tooth, known as the pulp. The pulp is the soft, inner core of the tooth that consists of blood vessels, nerves, and connective tissue. When the pulp is diseased or injured and cant repair itself, it dies. The most common cause of pulp death is a cracked tooth or a deep cavity. Both of these problems can let bacteria enter the pulp. Bacteria can cause an infection inside the tooth. Left without treatment, pus builds up at the root tip, in the jawbone, forming a "pus-pocket" called an abscess. Usually pain and swelling will result. Without treatment, your tooth may have to be removed. The aim of the treatment is to remove all infection from the root canal. The root is then cleaned and filled to prevent any further infection. Root canal treatment is a skilled and time-consuming procedure. Most courses of treatment will involve two or more visits to your dentist. At the first appointment, the infected pulp is removed. The root canal is then cleaned and shaped ready for the filling using thin files (as seen in the first x-ray). A temporary filling is put in and the tooth is left to settle. The tooth is checked at a later visit and when all the infection has cleared, the tooth is permanently filled. About 90 percent of root canals are successful and the pain does not return. However, sometimes a root canal needs to be redone or the tooth extracted.

Tooth Coloured filling material is called composite. They are similar in colour and texture to natural teeth. A "Direct" Composite filling is a tooth colored filling that is done in a single office visit. It is most appropriate for small restorations. The composite material is bonded to the tooth structure allowing conservation of as much natural tooth structure as possible. Direct Composite fillings are not for every tooth. They work best in small restorations and low-stress areas. Therefore they are not always suitable to fill large cavities at the back of the mouth. They are also more costly than silver fillings because they take longer to place. Research has shown that they do not last as long as other restorations.

The soft tissue at the core of a tooth is called the pulp, made up of nerve, blood vessels and other tissue. Patients normally refer to this as the “nerve”. The health of the pulp can be damaged by deep decay, fracture of the tooth or trauma or even wear and tear over many years. If it is damaged sufficiently it can become very painful or develop an abscess. At this stage only root canal treatment will save the tooth. Root canal treatment involves removing damaged or dead nerves and blood vessels in the root of the tooth and cleaning and disinfecting the roots. The space left is then filled with a material that seals the tooth and keeps it functioning as before. However in many cases the teeth are weakened because there is no longer a living “nerve” or pulp in them and a crown is often advised to protect the teeth.
Wisdom Tooth Extraction €100 - €200
Wisdom teeth (also known as third molars) usually erupt between the ages of 18 and 23. If these impacted teeth are in an abnormal position, food and bacteria can collect under the gum causing a local infection, pain, swelling and bad breath. If these symptoms are severe and frequent then the wisdom teeth need to be removed. Most wisdom tooth extractions can be performed in our surgery under local anaesthetic. If general anaesthetic or hospitalisation is needed there is a number of specialists to whom we can refer.
